Your New Login Experience
At Freedom Credit Union, protecting your money and personal information is one of our top priorities. Last month, we let you know about upcoming changes to how you log in to your account. As of October 1, those updates are now live — giving you a more secure and streamlined online banking experience.
Here’s what’s new and what you need to know:
Multifactor Authentication (MFA) Enhancements
Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is an extra layer of protection that makes it harder for someone else to access your account, even if they know your password. With the recent update, you’ll notice a few important improvements:
- Use an Authenticator App: You can now use apps like Google Authenticator, Authy, or LastPass to receive your one-time password. These apps generate secure codes right on your phone, even without an internet connection.
- Device Registration Updates: Devices can still be registered to skip MFA for everyday logins, but now they must be re-registered every 60 days for security.
- Extra Protection for Sensitive Actions: Certain services — like updating your contact information or making transfers to external accounts — will always require a secondary MFA code, even if your device is registered.
Email MFA Codes Are Retiring
To strengthen security, MFA codes will no longer be sent by email after November 1.
Here’s what to do:
- Make sure your mobile phone number is up to date in your account settings.
- Choose SMS or an authenticator app as your preferred way to receive MFA codes.
This change helps prevent fraudsters from trying to intercept codes through email.
October Is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
These updates are arriving just in time for Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to promote safer online habits. It’s the perfect time to pause and check your own digital security practices.
Here are a few tips to keep your online banking safe:
- Use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts. Consider using a password manager to keep track of them.
- Enable MFA wherever possible, not just for your credit union account. Many email, social media, and shopping sites also offer it.
- Be alert for phishing scams. If you receive an email or text that looks suspicious or asks for personal information, don’t click links — contact the organization directly.
- Keep your devices updated. Regular software and app updates often include important security fixes.
